A new study evaluates the impact of ethnicity on skin autoflourescence used to measure accumulation of atherogenic glycated proteins.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are the result of protein or lipid exposure to sugars. AGEs are known to be prevalent in the vasculature of patients with diabetes and to contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders.1,2 Some species of AGEs naturally exhibit fluorescence and techniques to measure skin autoflourescence (SAF) have been developed as potential noninvase tools to estimate AGE accumulation in human skin. The majority of SAF-based reference values have been developed using Caucasian/Asian populations.3,4The study highlighted in the short slide show above examines ethnicity- and gender-specific differences in SAF.
