Managing Hyperglycemia in COVID-19

A professor from Michigan Medicine discusses recent research from the institute and how protocols implemented at Michigan Medicine to manage the increased risk of severe outcomes associated with hyperglycemia in COVID-19.

New data from a team at Michigan Medicine is offering an overview of the impact hyperglycemia can have on outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Through observation of 200 patients and the establishment of specific protocols for these patients, investigators were able to both observe the effects of hyperglycemia and develop an effective management strategy to help prevent severe outcomes in these patients.

To learn more about this research, the protocols, and how this has impacted outcomes, Endocrinology Network reached out to senior investigator Rodica Pop-Busui, MD, PhD, the Larry. D Soderquist professor of diabetes, professor of internal medicine and vice chair of clinical research in the Department of Internal Medicine at Michigan Medicine.

This study, “Managing Hyperglycemia in the COVID-19 Inflammatory Storm,” was published in Diabetes.
