Our current Editorial Board members are:

Edward C. Chao, DO

Dr. Chao practices at the VA San Diego Healthcare System and is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He received his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency in internal medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Chao’s interests include diabetes research and medical education. 

 

 

Charles F. Shaefer Jr, MD

Dr Shaefer is assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He is also a member of University Primary Care Physicians, a group specializing in primary care internal medicine with a special interest in diabetes and preventive healthcare.

Dr Shaefer earned a medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and critical care medicine.

Dr Shaefer is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and is an active member of the American Diabetes Association. He is a member of the editorial board of Insulin and is a regular contributor to that journal as author of the “Primary Care Corner” feature. Dr Shaefer has been included in past and current listings of Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors in Augusta.

Dr Shaefer is the author of numerous papers and lectures frequently on the topics of diabetes and lipid disorders.

 

Edward J. Shahady, MD

Dr. Shahady is Medical Director of the Diabetes Master Clinicican Program and Clinical Professor at the University of Miami in Florida. He maintains Diabetes University DMCP and Family Medicine Teams.

 

 

 

Joseph M. Tibaldi, MD, FACP

Joseph M. Tibaldi, MD is an assistant clinical professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is in a private practice, a five- physician group, at Queens Diabetes and Endocrine Associates in Fresh Meadows, New York.

Dr Tibaldi received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and completed his residency training in internal medicine at Mount Sinai, followed by a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York.
 

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Tibaldi dedicates his expertise to teaching medical residents, endocrine fellows, and other health care providers. He is the author of several recently published papers on insulin therapy. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Diabetes and Complications. He has lectured to family physicians at PriMed and participated in the creation of an educational program for certified diabetes educators on insulin intensification, given country-wide in 2012. Recently he lectured on diabetes management for nurse practitioners and physician assistants as faculty for Practicing Clinician Exchange. Dr Tibaldi participates in clinical research and was involved in the Accord Trial. He has been a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology for more than 20 years and is currently the Secretary-Treasurer of the Lower New York Chapter and a member of the AACE CME Accreditation as well as the PCP Educational Initiative Committees. He also belongs to the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association and the Medical Society for the State of New York.

Jeff Unger, MD

Dr. Unger directs Unger Primary Care, a concierge medical practice in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. He also is the director of metabolic studies at the Catalina Research Institute. The research center uniquely incorporates primary care with clinical research in areas related to diabetes, sexual dysfunction, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, pain, obesity, and mental illness. He is the only family physician in the world who has been selected to oversee a cardiovascular outcomes trial (LEADER) and a study involving a once weekly GLP-1 analogue (semaglutide). Dr. Unger is also the only family physician to ever serve on the editorial board of the journal Diabetes Care. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Family Practice and Clinical Diabetes.

Within the past 15 years, Dr. Unger has published 3 medical textbooks on diabetes including Diabetes Management in Primary Care (1st and 2nd Editions) as well as more than 160 peer reviewed articles on topics related to migraine, mental illness, pain, spirituality and diabetes. In 2009, the American Diabetes Association honored Dr. Unger as their Father of the Year!

Dr. Unger is board certified in family practice and is a fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Melissa Young, MD, FACE, FACP

Dr. Young is an endocrinologist in private practice, an assistant clinical professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a working suburban mother of two in Freehold, NJ.
 
She earned her medical degree from the University of the Philippines Medical School, Manila, Philippines and completed residencies at Philippine General Hospital, Manila, Philippines and University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT. She also did a fellowship in endocrinology at Brown University-Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI.
