Type 1 Diabetes and the Microbiome

Type 1 Diabetes and the Microbiome

Is there a relationship between the gut and type 1 diabetes?

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism looked at a possible correlation.

The study compared biopsies of the duodenal mucosa in three groups of patients: type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and controls.

Inflammation was judged by gene expression study and immunohistochemistry.

In patients with type 1 diabetes, the gut microbiome and the inflammatory response were different compared with the other groups.

The expression of genes specific for the inflammatory process was associated with an abundance of specific bacteria in the duodenum.

The future may hold therapies targeting the gut in diabetes – a bold statement from the authors.
